So I just loaded the Steam X-Wing Special Edition for the first time.
Anyway I played it but the minute I launched it crashed! Fixed that with Jeremys ddraw update.
Are there any mods, widescreen fixes or other improvements for these games these days?
Been forever since I played X-wing. It brings back good memories.
I basically bought a PC just to run this game. In fact I think I rented one for a while lol It was on floppy disc back then.
I think I've got every version they released. I had the add on packs. Then the CD version, then the Collectors version. They did milk the game.
Not a lot changed over the years when you look at X-Wing Alliance. Same idea just newer graphics!
Still these old LucasArts games have a certain charm to them from long ago
What exactly have they changed in the Steam remastered version from the old Collectors CD?
Have they just updated the Opts to BoP ones or am I wrong and it's XWA.

Beyond replacing the original copy protection mechanisms with their own stuff, and wrapping the DOS versions in their own DOSBox configurations, Steam hasn't made any enhancements to the games.

X-Wing 95 has always had BoP models and lighting/rendering. X-Wing 95 doesn't have iMUSE anymore (I think the code and tracks are there, but it plays CD audio instead), doesn't allow you to assign pilots to other ships, has no music in any part of the concourse, and has a redesigned concourse and opening cutscene. At the time, I think they thought these were improvements. Retroactively, a lot of people prefer the first CD-ROM version.

The GOG release lets you choose between the original and CD releases.

The Steam release lets you choose among all three releases: "Classic" (diskette), "Collector's CD-ROM" (DOS CD), and "Special Edition" (Win95 CD). I recommend the DOS CD version.

How do you choose the other versions via steam?

In my install, when we click 'Play', Steam asks what of the three versions we want to play.

Mine doesn't do that. I have the STAR WARS X-Wing Special Edition version.Marcos_Edson wrote: ↑Fri Apr 24, 2020 1:54 pmIn my install, when we click 'Play', Steam asks what of the three versions we want to play.
Looks like all the old files are there but can't seem to make them run. Would need to look at Dosbox I think.
I'm not bothered as I can use updated Opts too. Silly they took out the launch screens as they were some of the best things!

If you right-click on the Steam icon in the system tray to start the game, it always launches the special edition (Win95). But if you open the Steam client, browse to the game's page in your library, and click the big green play button, it pops up a window with the choices.

Wow Classic is is a lot different today. Still it has something simple to it and great memories.
Landing back on your ship and the R2 being unloaded are great touches that would have been nice to see in XWA
