Where to multiplay?

I am happy of my XWA LAN weekends, with all my friends and nephew coming at my place to have some fun. But I miss the old MSN Zone when all this could be done more easyly, and quickly - on the basis of "ok, let's do a little melee before we have to go to bed" style. I still use my cd version of the game - I am not into gog or steam, so I know nothing about those platforms. There are other solutions?
