If I close down my web page???
I've just come back from the Funeral of my Aunt and i've been thinking. There are far more important things in my life to concentrate on.
XWA is dead! Admit it people. The XWAU is almost dead too. Just no one will openly say it. No one makes opts anymore, just many pictures of dxfs.
Anybody that does (like the Jedi Fighter) gets critised that it's not as good as the XWAU. Of course it isn't, but at least they made a whole opt!
I'm not finding the time or enthusiasm to work on any XW projects. Anytime I do make an update it's impossible to get anyone to even say what they think. I do it for my own fun but it's nice to know you enjoy me sharing my work!
I still have things I want to do for my website but I don't know when.
I have planned to eventually have my large collection of icons online, more Dat pics and Huds. Also a revamp of the site.
I ask you: Can you be bothered to wait months for me to do this or shall I just shut it down now!
I'm not going to waste my effort and quite frankly my life, if no one even bothers to use the items on it.
Ace Antilles.

I agree with you on most subjects, but I only ask that you finish the voices for the BoY. Then go and do what you want.

Whether or not you do any more work on xwa stuff is entirely up to yourself Ace, but I dont see any good reason to shut down your site. Its one of the best sites for xwa out there and closing it will just be hammering another nail into the coffin. If its a case where the site is costing you money to maintain move it to geocities or tripod, otherwise just leave it open. You've done good work for the game and it'd be a shame to see it dissappear.
While I agree with you somewhat on the subject of xwa being dead, its still the only game where you can fly an xwing so its staying on my harddrive till something else is released.

It's your decision, Antilles. Though it would be very sad to see another X-W site close! Especially yours, which is the best site besides DS' :(
[ 05 August 2002: Message edited by: ACE ]

There are several people here that should be ashamed. Ace Antilles just lost his aunt and not one of you acknowledged this let alone offered any condolances. All you have talked about is Ace's site in the context of your own self-centered interests in a video game.

quote:
by One
I agree with you on most subjects, but I only ask that you finish the voices for the BoY. Then go and do what you want.

The tone of your post is as if Ace was somehow contracted to you to do the work. Don't put conditions on when Ace gets to do what he wants. Ace can go do what he wants now and if that doesn't include the sounds for the BoY, so be it. That is his choice. Remember, those who edit XWA do it because they want to and they are not subject to other people's expectations.
Ace, I'm sorry about your aunt and I can only imagine how it must feel because I have not yet lost a close family member. Don't feel obligated to continue editing XWA or to maintain your site. Do it only if you want to and if it remains a positive activity in your life. Many of us would like to see your site stay up, but that decision is yours and yours alone.
Yes, XWA is dead. It is a tired game. That has been rather obvious for months if not for the last year or even longer depending on what perspective you take. Hardly anyone is putting out finished products for XWA anymore. Yes, there are lots of models being done but hardly any are becoming useable craft for XWA. Therefore, this community it seems, has largely become a discussion forum for modeling hobbyists rather than genuine XWA editing.
Whatever the case, I will press on with my projects. Completion of the XWA Atmospheric Expansion is going to require the efforts of present and future staff members. If the community wants this project done, the members of it are going to have to contribute. I realize that some people who want to help are still waiting for assignments, but please be patient as I am very busy now and for the next few weeks. As for those who have already contributed, thanks for your efforts.

Well, quite frankly Abolisher, I don't see why anyone should be ashamed. Ace's question was about his website. He wasn't asking for sympathy about his aunt, he was asking your opinions about his site.
Not to say that I am not sorry for Ace, on the contrary, I offer my deepest condolences to Ace.
So, to answer Ace's question:
Ace, I love you site. I don't go there as often as I used to, and I don't really contribute to the community at all, but I still appreciate the better things of it. However, as has been said before, it is your site, so the decision is ultimately yours.

Ace you're probably sick by now of people feeling sorry for you, but I am sorry about your aunt, I lost an aunt when I was 11, no-one understood me and spoke blind sympat. So I won't say anything else about it.
Anyway.
You are right, XWA is dying, I only really create missions to relieve bordem when there's nothing else to do, I'm not even that good. Your site is one of the best and would be a shame to lose, could you not hand over control to another member of the XWA editing community so they can maintain the excellence you started?

Abolisher, you're right that was in extremely bad taste. I apoligise Ace for my poor choice of words and offer my condolences for your loss of a loved one.

Never been active here, just happened to come by again because I started playing XwA again this week and wanted to see if any changes happened since last time.
Sad, but true, the ones still playing XwA are the real hardcore fans probably, and it is almost to be expected things slow down to an almost dead stop. It is only natural,
new interrests arise.
I'd be sorry though to see your site go, dunno how much it costs in terms of keeping it the way it is now...tell you one thing, although I don't know much about the XwA scene, I gathered you're a big part of it, I also know if it weren't for your site, I'd still have to make do with the sounds on the CD instead of the great audio upgrades I found their.
As I said, would be sad to see it go, and if it doesn't cost any money to let it remain static, I'd understand if you closed it, that's life man, things change, we change. I do I still enjoy flyin the occasional mission or the rings ( where I deserved my nick ;)
Sad truth is folks need bigger changes to stay interrested in using a game that long (mostly for lack of a good similar game), such as a total conversion, but, that takes a heap of amount of spare time, more than most of us willing to give up...
Whatever you decide, thanks for having done what you did.

Well, I personally like your site, but, like what everyone else said, it's your decision.
I also am sorry about your aunt. I can only imagine your pain. I lost a great-grandmother a couple years back. But that really can't compare to an aunt.
Whatever your decision, we will all back you.

quote:
Well, quite frankly Abolisher, I don't see why anyone should be ashamed. Ace's question was about his website. He wasn't asking for sympathy about his aunt, he was asking your opinions about his site.

Unbelievable. Does a person really have to ask for sympathy when a family member dies? Sympathy is an immediate and normal response anytime someone you know loses a loved one. Completely disregarding someone's loss of a loved one and carrying on "life as usual" is both rude and insensitive, IMO. Wouldn't you feel at least awkward if a family member of yours died and everyone you told it to just ignored it and carried on normal conversation?
I don't mean to offend anyone here and I'm not trying to start flame wars. I was very disturbed by the initial lack of sympathy and I had to say something about it. I don't think anyone's neglect of sympathy was truly intentional as evidenced by the most recent replies.
I don't see any reason to discuss this (side topic) any further. Just remember the important things in life and that XWA is just a game with little real life significance. Carry on.
[ 06 August 2002: Message edited by: Abolisher ]

Sorry for your loss.. regarding your aunt, my prayers go out to you and your family, Ace Antilles. Regarding your website, If you feel you must close it that is your choice, you're right XWA is a 'old' game now. But hear me out..Xwing Alliance at least to me is the 'only' game that I know of regarding the Star Wars universe that is really fun to play (Space Simulation-wise :D) To me there are only a few XWA websites that I go to:, Darksaber's, JM's, your's, Flavid's, Abolisher's and a few other's. So if you do decide to close your website... like I said, your choice but it would put a dent in the already fragile XWA community..
Sincerely, rogue518
[ 06 August 2002: Message edited by: rogue518 ]

Ace Antilles!
Accept my condolences for your loss.
As for the closing of your site, it's really up to you. XWA is really a dying game...
But check your visitor counter!
A lot of person here still enjoy playing with it. You really did something that I think worth for lasting.
Your site *as other XWA sites as well* is somehow a symbol to me. A symbol that we don't accept the way Lucasarts treating it's customers. It doesn't care about petitions, mails.
So your site is a symbol of protest for me.
If you feel you want to close it, do it so.
*I hope you don't think of me as an idiot*
Anyway I thank you in the name of all the gamers who use your work.
Nice work!!!

Hi Ace,
I'm very sorry to hear about your loss.
Just to let you know, you have contributed more to this whole shooting match then most of the rest of us combined.
You take all the time you need to get settled. If you decide to comeback, great! If not, thank you so much for all the work you have done.
Take Care,
TC: Knight of the Old Code

You know my position on our aunt Ace Antilles.
I think your site is good and can be developed but try not to work on it soo much. That may sound odd, I mean don't let it take up too much of your time and enjoy the times that you do work on it. Try doing 1 update a month which may be a large update or a small one.
If you want help with updates then I will do whatever I can, okay.
So many projects on the go.
Creator of Opt Viewer, V-38 Assault Fighter and Alliance Escort Carrier.
Currently working on OptED an all new advanced Opt program.
