Maybe you guys can help me: Is it legal to use mods for XWA? I know the EULA says something about not altering .exe files or using original sound effects, so is it legal to use binhexedit and alliED? Just wondering.

Well no ones been in trouble with LucasArts for the last twelve years using them, so I wouldn't worry about it at all. The worst that will happen is that they'll contact you and ask you to take down your work before they'll consider legal action. Only if you're making money from it will it land you in serious trouble.

Strictly, modifying .EXE files should be illegal... and even .OPT format use could be illegal, as this particular file format could be protected by Lucas Arts game copyright... but i'm not well informed about this matter.
However, i simply think no-one of us will go to jail for this infringements ;)

It's still possible to buy an original copy of XWA and we are keeping this game alive for free...
IF or WHEN Lucasarts creates a new X-Wing game, THAN we are ready to buy it, because we love this game and its legacy.
