Hi all
Just wondering if anyone has any plans of making any of the new ships from Rogue One?

I thought Avarice1987 was referring to the First Order's huge ISD in the TFA, movie. If he's referring to me via ISD-2, I'm still re-working the meshes with more detail than before. :-)

Someone knows exactly the rotations degrees of the shuttle slot? It should be somewhat 130 degrees...? I'm planning to use the shuttle's slot to have working S-Foils.

Can't say for sure but I'd say it's as close as you get.

You know, this ship remembers me the Earth's fighter from the 1970's Buck Rogers show...

130 Degrees should be about right

Shuttle in hangar before wings open, more or less 130 Degrees

Thanks DS! As always, your help is precious!
Always it seemed strange to see the Lamda Imperial shuttle landing in the hangar of the Rebel Alliance. Now that Lucasfilm introduced the U-Wing, we know what use the Alliance as a tactical transport.
I'm planning a patch, to replace the Lamda class shuttles in the Hangar with the U-Wing, and in the missions to replace all rebel Lamda with U-Wings...
What do you think?

That already looks quite good, DTM.

Y'know, when I first read your idea about replacing all Rebel Lambdas, I was like "uh, please no." But then I thought about it. It really is odd that the Rebels have this many captured Imperial shuttles. Plus, having something new in the XWA campaign would give people another reason to play through it again.

I'm guessing then, you will give the U-wing the Lambda slot and then give the Lambda another one?

On top of my head, the only missions where the Rebels would have to keep using a Lambda would be Battle 3, Mission 7 where Kupalo steals the Shuttle Zaletta arrived with, and Battle 6 Mission 7 where the Tyderium leaves for Endor.

I'm all for more ships for XWA, and the U-Wing is looking great already DTM.

That said, regarding the Lambda shuttle being seemingly overly available to the alliance. The mistake is assuming that they're all stolen imperial ones. The Lambda in universe has always been widely available across the Empire both in military and civilian markets and are commonly used by various individuals and transport services. It's literally nothing special, though the military shuttles obviously have military hardware and the civilians are lesser versions.

The usage differences between the Lambda and the U-Wing should be pretty obvious. The Lambda is not by definition a combat/assault transport. The Sentinel class, DX9, and Escort Shuttle fill those roles much better. The Lambda is a personnel transport with largely defensive capabilities, and is almost always escorted by another ship. Think of it like a Lear Jet.

The U-Wing however is obviously some derivative of a combat assault craft similar to the LAATs of the Clone Wars era, but with a less beefy armament . Though, even though it seems like it should be a short hop ship, in the movie it's obviously capable of longer jumps (though definitely not comfortable a ride for those carried judging by the interior/layout of the ship), and the engines definitely appear capable enough of the range, although they are probably designed that way more for the quick insert/extract role.

All that said, it's Star Wars and sometimes they really don't think through designs beyond the "Rule of Cool" until the portion of the fanbase who actually cares about tech details starts questioning things, and then have to come up with in universe explanations regarding X feature or X design.

The one and only thing that really makes me wonder about the U-Wing though, other than having an obviously generated name, is functionally why does the ship have S-foils? It certainly isn't due to heat dissipation like the X or B wings, and in atmosphere they always seem to be closed (from what I remember), so it obviously has nothing to do with generating lift; then again with repulsor lift engines wings that engage with real physics aren't really necessary.

Either way it's a neat ship, and I quite like it. I'm actually a little frustrated I can't find the FFG X-Wing version anywhere as it's literally sold out everywhere, and I don't even think my local store got a copy.

DTM do you plan on doing an interior, not that it matters much, or going sans-interior since the ship is more of a support/transport ship instead of a combat vessel?

I'd concur with Corrann on this. The U-wing doesn't really fill the same role as the Lambda shuttle. It's more like a Space Huey or Blackhawk.

I agree with your analysis. Lambda is a Learjet, LAAT is an Mil Mi 24 helicopter and the U-wing is a long range transport for special operations: something like the V22 Osprey.
Maybe the idea to replace the Lamda in the missions is not so good, but I would like to see it landing in the rebel hangar...

My idea about the U-Wing S-foil: the first time we see the U-Wing, it take off from Yavin, opens its wings immediatly and leavs fast. During combat it gives ground support to the rebel troopers. Maybe for this role it takes the wings closed because of its slow speed and to offer a smaller target...

In the canon the U-Wing has a similar backstory as the X-Wing, It was made by Incom for the Empire, and then cancelled because of the Empire nationalizing the company.

There are civilian variants as well according to the Visual Guide.

The X-Wing miniature game offers an explanation for the S-Foils. You can read about it on the FFG website. Whether that is what it will be in-universe or not going forward is anyone's guess. I am sure there is already an Incredible Cross-Sections books, though. :-P

Avarice mentioned there looked to be a TIE Striker shuttle, and I saw it too during the movie, being escorted by two normal TIE Strikers.

In regards of the U-wing and Lambda, I guess it depends on whether we judge it by canon or legends standards. I mean, they did use the U-wing to go to Jedha when they could have just used a normal transport. That to me suggests it serves as normal transport as well as gunship for the Rebellion.

And while the Lambda was used by virtually everyone in legends, it has so far only seen use by the Empire in the new canon (Tyderium aside).

Keep in mind that even Blackhawk helicopters are used for general transport at times, and not just airborne assaults.

Nice start DTM. By the way, you can temporarily display ANY .opt model in a hangar without actually replacing existing craft and objects.
Using Jeremy's hangar patch and the HangarObjects.txt and HangarMap.txt files in your MISSIONs folder.... you would just use this:
i.e. FlightModels/Shuttle.opt = FlightModels/U-Wing.opt (backslash, not forward slash).

It would assign the contents of U-Wing to the Lambda Shuttle slot while you are ONLY in the Hangar scene.
The U-Wing would NOT show up in the mission itself if a Shuttle FG was actually used. Everything else status quo. Problem solved. :-)
