Hi

I have been away from XWA for 2 weeks, and now none of the versions I have installed on my desktop PC (megapatches 4, 5, x-wing conversion or BoP conversion) will start. The only thing that will run is a vanilla v2.02 version, running from the xwingalliance.exe. I am on Win 10 and when last tried everything ran smoothly. Running Alliance.exe brings up the launcher, but it is not possible to start a game - nothing at all happens. The configurators all work ok though.

I tried the DEP exclusion trick but get a dialog that says "this program must run with DEP enabled. You cannot turn off DEP for this program." :hilfe:

TFTC 1.1 running on my win 10 laptop is OK......

Thanks for your advice,

oj

Question is, what changed on your end? If it ran fine and no stopped something must have changed. Please see this post:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=12717
and see if you can get a crash dump to see what is happening.

Hi - my system is:

Dell Desktop
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8400 CPU @ 2.80GHz 2.81 GHz
Installed RAM 8.00 GB (7.81 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti

Edition Windows 10 Home
Version 21H1
Installed on ‎18/‎09/‎2020
OS build 19043.1348
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3920.0

No changes have been made to the system since I last successfully ran XWAU. I cannot run any version of XWAU, which ran previously. The splash screen comes up on clicking Alliance.exe, when trying to start any game the 'whoosh' sound is made on clicking 'play' but nothing else happens.

I was afraid of this, exception code 0xc0000005 means that DEP is very likely to be the issue you are having. I have however no idea why Windows won't let you add an exception for that game.

Did you try both methods of disabling DEP:

This exception code suggests it's an issue with Windows' DEP.
You can try this:
go to Windows Security -> App & Browser Control -> Exploit Protection Settings -> Program settings then click "Add program to customize", click "Choose exact file path" and add the path to the XwingAlliance.exe program. Which for me, is D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Wars X-Wing Alliance\XWingAlliance.exe. Then you override "Data Execution Prevention (DEP)" and set it to "off".
You can also set a general exception for the X-Wing alliance.exe here:
DEP settings are here:
Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced System Settings > Performance > DEP

Thanks - using the second method worked (Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced System Settings > Performance > DEP).

The reason I could not get it to work firstly was (goes red, feels sheepish, mumbles...) that I was trying to set it for Alliance.exe, not xwingalliance.exe.... :ops:

Thanks so much for your advice, and great work on the game. Have a virtual beer on me.
