Dark Side Friday is here!! We give you XWAU 2020 Mega Patch Update 5
MegaPatch5.jpg

This release was originally going to be small but like all things XWAU, it exploded into something bigger!
We have brand new models, updated versions, great new Simulator images and more.
It also includes some recent improvements to the VR experience.
I'll upload a few screenshots here later or in various topics, so check for those

This is expected to be our last major release for 2021. Our 2020 Mega Patch has grown hugely in size. So that means....
We need to make an XWAU 2022 Mega Patch!! We've got lots of cool ideas and improvements to bring you in the future :)
We hope you enjoy this release and will keep an eye on the forum for more updates as available.
Update 5 is available to download now!
Please read on for the full release notes.

=================================================================================================================

Please backup any Pilot saves, custom configuration files or changes that you have custom edited before installing this Update. We are not responsible for lost game progress.

New Releases

Death Star Upgrades v1.0: First release of Death Star tunnel upgrades by Blue Max and Vince T, with Marco Antonio.
Brand new models for the Focus Chamber, Reactor Room and Core. The tunnel tubes are now 3D, not flat images. The reactor room has a new force field. The end Core explosion has been greatly improved and the textures are a higher resolution!

TIE Avenger v6.0: Totally new version of the TIE Avenger (Advanced) created by DTM.
It comes with a new Dynamic Cockpit, HD textures and a fully detailed Exterior with modelled pilot.
There are 2 profile choices. Mark 1 has a rounded cockpit and Mark 2 a more angular cockpit look.
New cannon and warning lights. It also uses a new custom coloured HUD and Reticle. This can be changed in the ships INI file.
Please see the readme file for the full details here: Readme\XWAU Crafts\TIE Avenger Readme.docx

TIE Defender v6.0: Totally new version of the TIE Defender created by DTM.
It comes with a new Dynamic Cockpit, HD textures and a fully detailed Exterior with modelled pilot.
New cannon and warning lights. It also uses a new custom coloured HUD and Reticle. This can be changed in the ships INI file.
Please see the readme file for the full details here: Readme\XWAU Crafts\TIE Defender Readme.docx

News1.jpg

XQ6 Platform v1.0: Vince T has completed the last of the XQ-series Platforms for us to use.
It comes with animated lights on the landing platforms indicating the Hangar pad to use.
As well as a new Hangar that can be landed in for custom missions with unique maps for each faction.
Please see the readme file for the full details here: Readme\XWAU Crafts\Platform 6.docx

News2.jpg

Simulator Battle Menus: Amazing updated images by Forceflow for all the Battles and Missions in the Flight Simulator.
Forceflow spent a long time fully rendering these from the XWAU opts, enhancing with lighting and backdrops to make great representations of the missions! The images replace the standard ones for Battles 0 – 7.

Custom Battle Menus: Compiled by Ace Antilles with new images by Forceflow. Recent Hook improvements now allow us to add Flight Simulator Battle images for missions 8 and beyond! Ace has made a Dat file which allows you to replace the template images with your own for Battles 8 – 20. You must have a working custom edited Mission.lst file to make use of these features.
For the full details or questions please see the Forum thread here: https://www.xwaupgrade.com/phpBB3/viewt ... 34&t=13722

New Updated Versions

XQ Platforms 1-4 - Vince T has updated the Platforms. Now they have color coded Hangar Force Fields. Blue for Players and Red for AI so you can see which hangar you will use when landing. They come with animated landing stripes lights on the landing platforms and antenna lights. Also the FG colours have been converted to Skins for all the Platforms.
Please see the readme files for the full details here: Readme\XWAU Crafts\Platform etc.docx

Millennium Falcon v3.3 - With Master Qui-Gon’s permission, Ace Antilles has made many improvements to the ship and pilots. Material files have been added. The separate 3 different Falcon versions have been merged into one version using Object Profiles and Skins. So now to change between Han Solo or Lando piloting the ship, you just need to activate the correct Profile.
You can activate and default to the different Object Profiles via Babu Frik’s Configurator or manually via Mission INI files.
The exterior pilots have had an overhaul! Han, Lando Calrissian & Nien Nunb are now wearing outfits as seen in Return of the Jedi.
Skins: There are now 4 different looks of Han Solo that can be used. ANH, ESB and TFA, all with slightly different movie outfits.
Please see the readme files for the full details here: Readme\XWAU Crafts\Millennium Falcon Readme.docx

News4.jpg

Space Colony 1 v1.2 – Vince T created a brand-new Hangar OPT for the station with interior hangar map by Ace Antilles.
This can be used with any faction for custom missions. Also added are animated external antenna lights.

ATR-6 Assault Transport v2.2 – Vince T has replaced the old Turrets with new HD versions to improve the look.
Also it now has a Blank Skin for custom makers. A material file has been added and an improved LOD version.

Starship choices: There have been some big changes to Babu Frik’s Configurator so please read the information below.
Many optional choices have been removed. We removed the alternate options for the X-wing or Y-wing. If you are using these versions they can still be used, but you are no longer able to select them in Babu Frik and will be removed at a later point in time completely. You can use Babu Frik to switch to Spyders version still but you won’t be able to switch back.
Other changes are the different options for the TIE Defender, Corellian Gunship, Shuttle and Lasers have been removed.

You can see pictures and videos of the XWA Upgrade releases in the Showcase section on our website.

New Effects

Special Effects Pack: We welcome @MechDonald to the XWAU Team! He has been very busy making cool new effects for us.
Contains: New and better explosion animations, new more detailed blast marks, fiery sparks and hit effects. These really enhance the enjoyment of blowing stuff up! Thanks to Blue Max we also have more variations of explosions than ever before!

Animations.dat - 2008 - Ion hit effect on hull, 3100 - 3500 - Shield hit effect restored which was removed accidentally.
Blastmarks.dat -New blast mark textures and animations. Now the holes you make in the hull will spark or be on fire.
Explosions (Alt*).dat - All new explosions with far more animations for impressive displays of destruction.
Partcles.dat - Better fiery sparks emitted by destroyed or tumbling fighter debris before explosion.
Sparks.dat – New enhanced hit effects.

Rubble: Brand new shaped models from MechDonald that appear when large ships or stations are destroyed.
The different new opts are shown depending on what type of ship is destroyed and look more like pieces of hull.
Blue Max has also added fire and spark texture animation effects to them. It really enhances the look of your victory.

Check out a video of some of the effects in action!

Automatic Greebler: @blue_max has created some new improvements which are first implemented in this release.
In a few words, this shader will automatically add details to any surface as needed, depending on how close you are. The basic idea is that no matter how close you fly to an object, there will always be small details on its surface.
For the full details or questions please see the Forum thread here: https://tinyurl.com/yg583xxa

Custom HUD Colors: Blue Max has created a section which can be added to the Flightmodels crafts ini file: [HUDColor]
It is now possible to customize the color of the HUD so you no longer are limited to the four options we have in the Video Options menu. The HUD color is specified on a per-craft basis. It works like RGB, so you can alter your HUD and Reticle color.
For the more details or questions please see the Forum thread here: https://tinyurl.com/395xjfc3

VR Improvements: With big help from @m0rgg there’s a new CockpitLook released Hook to fix the jittering experienced in VR.
The cockpit shake is no longer used to implement positional tracking. VR was never intended for XWA. So it’s still a great bonus.
For the more details or questions please see the Forum section here: https://tinyurl.com/23fr8cdu

Please see the readme file for further details here: Readme\Special Effects\Special Effects Readme.docx

Other Updates

Please backup any Pilot saves, configuration files or changes that you have custom edited before installing this Update, as this release could reset them to defaults.
This release has many changes to Effects, Flightmodel INI, Dynamic Cockpits and Material files.

Config File – The XWAU installer will now automatically change the Config.CFG file to enable Use 3D Hardware, Hardware MIP Mapping, 32 Channels sound and High-Quality Sound. This is to avoid known crashing issues.

Alliance Launcher – Jérémy Ansel has added an "Advanced Options" menu to the launcher. It allows:
"Open XWA Directory" button to open the game X-Wing Alliance directory in a new window.
"Run XWA with Command Line" button to run XWA with a command line argument.
"Run XWA with Procdump" button to generate a crash dump when the XWA exe crashes. This can help us bug fix issues.

Effects – All the latest Effects and VR Beta files bug fixes and improvements by Blue Max have been added.
Alternate Explosions: Each one of the default explosions can have up to 5 variants that are shuffled randomly every 5 seconds.
Warning Lights and Cannon Ready Events. The lights in the reticle can now be placed in the Dynamic Cockpit using events.
Various bug fixes related to the Dynamic Cockpit. Instruments are now readable even in low-lighting conditions.
Please see the readme files for further details here: Readme\Special Effects\Special Effects Readme.docx

Hooks - The latest Hooks and CFG files by Jérémy Ansel (JérémyaFr) as of the date of this release.
Note: The Hook files are only overwritten if the existing file is older than the new file, otherwise installation is skipped.
Hook_60FPS – Added script to remove "Hook_60FPS.dll". This file is not needed with XWAU but works in other XW games.

Millennium Falcon v3.3 – Ace Antilles has made many changes and improvements to the ship and pilots.
Falcon: Updated the cockpit textures to improve the Base opt and added a movie door at the rear. Tweaked the cockpit illumination and fixed an issue with Chewbacca’s foot peeking out. New textures for the rear vents. The TFA sensor dish has been merged as a Profile. New Material files added to improve the general look, especially of the cockpit Nien Nunb.
The Mini Falcon has also been updated to reflect all the various changes.
Lando Calrissian: He is now dressed in an outfit more similar to what he wore during the Battle of Endor in ROTJ.
Improved the look of his eyes. Improved color versions of the textures.
Nien Nunb: Replaced the body with a regular one. Totally new outfit as seen in the ROTJ. Added his black gloves and hat.
Han Solo: Improved and replaced color versions of the textures. Han now wears his Endor outfit by default.
The Force Awakens version is now a Skin. Older Han has a different skin colour, face and clothes.
Skins: There are now 4 different versions of Han Solo skins that can be used. All with slightly different movie outfits.
Based on his looks in A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
Please see the readme files for the full details here: Readme\XWAU Crafts\Millennium Falcon Readme.docx

Platform 1 v1.2 – Vince T added: New color coded Hangar Force Fields. Blue for Players and Red for AI to make it easier to find when landing. It comes with animated landing stripes lights on the landing platforms and antenna lights.
Added more details to hangar model. Some texture tweaks.
Removed the FG colors from models and converted into skins. Added a blank skin. If you used FG in custom missions they will need editing to use the new Skins in the mission INI files.

Platform 2 v1.1 – Vince T added: New color coded Hangar Force Fields. Blue for Players and Red for AI landing.
It comes with animated landing stripes lights on the landing platforms and antenna lights.
Removed the FG colors from models and converted into skins. Added a blank skin. If you used FG in custom missions they will need editing to use the new Skins in the mission INI files.
Added a special Rebel Alliance Skin, inspired by the upcoming TFTC Intro cutscene by OtaKing.

Platform 3 v1.1 – Vince T added: New color coded Hangar Force Fields. Blue for Players and Red for AI to find when landing.
Added more details to hangar model. Some texture tweaks. Added "Under Construction" meshes, available as object profiles.

Platform 4 v1.1 – Vince T added: New color coded Hangar Force Fields. Blue for Players and Red for AI to find when landing.
Added more details to hangar model. Some texture tweaks.

Scout Craft – Vince T has given this great looking ship from Marco Antonio a few fixes.
Reduced the number of laser hardpoints per turret from 4 to 2. This matches the original game. Reverted to Turbo Lasers.
Converted Tri-Faces into Quad-Faces to improve performance.
Split up parts of the LOD and assigned to their respective HD mesh for better distance performance.

TIE Fighter and TIE Interceptor – Minor cockpit improvements from DTM. Added Broken Beam Weapon. HUD Colors added.
TIE Bomber and TIE Advanced X1 – HUD Colors have been added to the Flightmodels INI file. Added Broken Beam Weapon.

Trash Compactor Clean-up – As we add many new files or correct others it can lead to a lot of obsolete game files.
The installer now goes through and deletes those files that we setup. They will be added to the Backup directory if needed.
There is now an extra Babu Frik cleanup process to delete any files related to the recent changes.

Bug Fixes

Flying with the cockpit off will cause the player craft to receive much higher damage. This bug was caused by Hook_Weapon_Color.dll. It has been fixed with the latest Hook releases included in this Update.

XWA German Language: Mission 1B0M8W [Joining the Rebellion] - Deep Space Strike Evaluation.
2 of the Nav Buoys were mislabelled from the games original release. This has now been fixed by the XWAU.

Shiplist.txt – Removed incorrect instances of “,,” in the file causing compatibility problems.

Mission changes

Please backup any missions or configuration files that you have custom edited before installing this Update, as this release will overwrite them with new versions.
This or previous releases have many changes to Mission INI files and the Mission TIE files.

See previous Update Readmes for the full list of recent Mission changes. Readme\Updates\XWAU Mega Patch Update

B7M1 - B7M4 – Fixes to Flightgroup colors so they match each mission. Liberty closed hangar doors. Defiance damaged skin.
Swapped X-Wings to use XwingR.opt. This allows more FG colour variety options for the various wingmen.
Missions set to use the new Falcon Lando Object Profile. TIE’s set to No Pilot Ejects to save FPS and excess clutter in space.
Satellites fixed so they are hidden from easy targeting using T, to avoid confusion and set to Neutral faction.
Imperial Star Destroyers set to Pre identified so you can see the names. B7M4 backdrop lighting change for new DS surface opt.

Important Information and Known Issues

Virus Warnings: Your security program may list the download as unsafe. This is a false result, just select “Keep” or Allow.

XWAU takes up a LOT more room than the original game. Right now, almost 9gb without custom mods and future expansions.
So please make sure you install it to a drive with lots of free space as well as 10-20gb of free space on your Windows drive too.

Some people have issues with installing updates. If you get an error, try unticking the “Create desktop shortcuts if available” from the final installer choice screen. If you still get issues then please consult the XWA Upgrade Forums.

Please make sure you play the game by opening Alliance.exe. A desktop shortcut will be made during installation.
Do NOT use open Steam, GoG or other shortcuts. Make sure they are closed during play or it will affect the XWAU files.

The first thing you should do is run Babu Frik's Configurator from the Launcher menu. In that you can setup your graphics and VR options to improve things as you wish. Don't forget to read our Beginners Guide for help too.

There are rare cases were the game itself will not launch at all after installing XWAU or TFTC. No error message appears, the game simply will not launch. This appears to be an issue with Windows 10s DEP (Data Execution Prevention)
If this is the case you need to add the XwingAlliance.exe into the DEP exception list. Instructions on how to do this can be found here: forums.tomshardware.com It’s recommended to not disable DEP altogether but only to add the executable into the exception list. How to do that is listed as the last point in the above forum post.
For the more details please see the Forum thread here: https://tinyurl.com/4wywxej7

Make sure 3D Hardware and MIP Mapping is turned ON in the Video options, Hardware section. This prevents crashes.
Be aware that some people report issues with high refresh rates on monitors. Changing it to 60hz can help fix that.

Open Joystick Configurator from the Launcher to setup your Joystick options.
A few people have been experiencing some issues with joysticks and controllers. With so many modern Joysticks etc and any old game it's tricky. With the Mega Patch release more people are trying our new system so we may find a few small bugs. This isn't like Squadrons so don't expect XWA to accept all the latest gear in one click but it's better than before.
If you have any issues then read and post in this topic for help.

XWA CD Version: If you are still using the old CDs for XWA it is getting harder to support that system. We do recommend you upgrade to a digital version such as sold by GoG.com etc. They can be very cheap in sales.
Sound Issues: If you find you are missing some mission sounds then you need to copy the WAVE folder from both CDs to the XWA main folder. If asked to replace any files then select not to do that. The sounds will then run from your PC.

This is awesome! What a pleasant Thanksgiving surprise! One question, will this affect anything with TFTC? Will the new tie models be available for that game too?

This is untested on TFTC atm. There is a v1.2 in the works for TFTC which will allow the new ties but its a few weeks away I believe.
You can't install Update 5 if you have an active TFTC installed. Best to revert to the light side, then install Update 5, and then revert back to TFTC.
Do so at your own risk unless you back everything up first.
For any more help it's best to consult in the TFTC forum section.

Have you changed anything on the new ISD 2 models that they don't go on the FPS like that anymore?

That's something I did in a previous update, not sure if it was 3 or 4.

That being said

Welp, since you put that page and it got the ETR listed on it, I have to ask : Any chance of also doing the "antenna" variant for the ETR ? (It does exist in XWA, but it was dummied out, hence why I am asking)

I should have said that the control ship ETR you are talking about is back in the XWAU already.
I made the unused version basic workable and in the missions it's featured in it's there.
Using Opt Replacing in the mission INI it shows up instead of the ETR.
But yes a new and improved version would be great

Thanks so much for this update! Can’t wait to try it out.

One small update I really appreciate is having the Star Destroyers pre-identified. This will help a lot with the narrative of XWA, knowing which ships and potentially commanders are on the battlefield, making it more immersive!

I was hoping to see a new opt for the Escort Transport, which is the last of the ships to update. This one would also be utilised in TFTC I believe. Fingers crossed for the next update!
