Been messing around ...
Right so ... Back in 2004 I made a black hole OPT. Somewhat looked like this

....

Yeah ok, kinda funky I guess...

Fast forward 16 years:

I just recently stumbled over the old model and thought, "let's see what you can do with HD textures, material files and blue_max' effects".

This is just a rough test, I'm probably going to remodel the thing to make it rounder. Still I'm quite happy the way it turned out.

And it sort of works (without the gravity ofc). The inner sphere, i.e. event horizon actually has its faces inverted. So while it'll just look like a normal sphere, once you get closer the shimmering and glossiness you'd expect from a normal sphere will actually inverted and thus appear distorted to you. But we're not done here:
- Because the faces are inverted, colliding with them on your way in will damage but not destroy you
- Inside everything's black, you'll have no more vision of the world beyond the event horizon
- Trying to fly back outside WILL destroy you upon collision with the faces. MUAHAHAHAHA

I also tríed using the ini file to make it spin. While it does so nicely, there's an issue that the engine glows representing the plasma jets are being distorted. Instead of one pointing up an done pointing down, both point down all of a sudden. It works on lower rotation speeds but therefore the engine glows actually flicker like beacons rather than appearing constantly.
@Jeremy, if you read this, and ever feel bored, could you take a look at this phenomenon?

Cue Interstellar music ....

Looks interesting. Bit on the bright side though.
How large is it roughly?

Have you seen the real ones? They tend to be quite bright, unlike their name suggests :D
In fact, I hadn't checked the size since back then, checked now:
- According to OPTech the model is 39km in diameter (wtf?)
- According to XWA's tech librarry it's 4km (WTF?!?!?)
I may probably scale it down to get rid of the disappearing effect.

now all we need is some gravitational lensing.

Nice! Could have used something like that for the black hole wash mission in my SAAB mission set. (Used one of the backgrounds for the black hole, so it's purely cosmetic)
