Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give you all a heads up that reshade, a post processing injector that adds all kinds of great effects like Bloom, HDR, Depth of Field, and many others, works for Xwing Alliance thanks to Jeremy moving us over to dx11.

Here is a link to the program. http://www.reshade.me

If you use the reshade framework, it has a wonderful GUI that includes tons of community made effects and an easy tweaking tool that you can use. When I get home, I'll throw some screenshots up. Right now I'm working on getting Matsos DoF to display properly. It looks amazing in game.

Edit: Here is the link to the latest release. Drop the files and folder into the root X-wing alliance folder (Where the .exe are located)

Interesting, would certainly love to see what you can do with this. Does it need to be licensed or is it free to use?

It's free to use! The download is at the link I mentioned. You can even post pre-configured setups on their website.

Edit: Here are some screenshots. I've been going a little overboard with the bloom, but there are quite a few effects going on. It's like an entirely new game with the Ambient Occlusion, Sharpening, SMAA, Godrays, color correction, HDR, motion blur. I still haven't gotten my head around the Depth of Field, but once I do, that's going to really make things interesting.

I'm sure once some of you guys get a hold of this, you'll come up with some presets that are a lot better than mine. If any of you have played Skyrim, you'll be able to recognize this as being similar to some of the ENB mods out there.

Anyway, here are some of my first screenshots.

Nice, sure seems that it does open up quite a few new options. Certainly worth looking into it. Not sure if we have someone on the team who can play around with this a bit more so I'd highly recommend you keep playing with it and share your results!

Thanks Kampher. Agree with ForceFlow. Lot of us are already swamped with other XWAUPG & related projects. Please spearhead this for the community as far as best configuration specs for XWA. One question for you.... does this TSR software help with static .DAT images (re-render true high-color image quality) for XWA engine ? I'm assuming no, just for 3D model application.

Hi Bman,

I'm not sure, but I'll certainly check their forums and look into it.

Here is a zip that has all of the files I'm using at the moment. It still needs work. Bloom is still a little too bright, and I turned off Depth of Field for now, as it is easily the most difficult thing to configure. Right now it just looks like I smeared vasoline all over the screen.

The rest of it looks pretty good I think. Lasers ligtht up, objects now take into consideration light sources thanks to HDR, colors have been vastly adjusted (might need some more work, there are several different shaders to achieve this), and there are gimicks like lens flare and such.

There are a few bugs at the moment, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to resolve them. It's probably inherent in the way the injector handles things.

1. Initialy starting the game may hang it for a bit, but it will load eventually. Just click through the movies, and give it a second to load.
2. The Main Menu's flicker and are receptive to the bloom and HDR. You can resolve this by just turning the effects off for now by pressing the Scroll Lock key.

I beleive you may need to ensure 32bit rendering is enabled in the Exe with Jeremy's tools. I also have DSCUP, which I assume has a lot of Jeremy's D3D enablers and such. I'm pretty sure Darksaber enabled all of this with the regular XWAUpgrade.exe package as well.

The attached zip has the files and folders you need. Please open the "XWA Reshade Alpha" folder inside the zip file, and place these 3 things into the root of your X-Wing alliance install (Where your .exe's are located)
1) Reshade.fx
2) dxgi.dll
3) The Reshade Folder

I've never really done anything like this before, so if you guys have trouble getting this to work, just let me know and I'll look further into how to share everything correctly. Still, I think you guys will be pleasantly surprised if it works for you. The results are pretty impressive.

OMGZ!!!!!

Pro: Those new shader effects are plain awesome.
Con - or this may be considered a feature: Due to the new lighting system the final endor mission becomes hard as hell. And I mean HARD
Kudos to anyone who manages to survive past the first 60 seconds! Even with invulnerability I failed at my first attempt when the lights go out during the escape sequence. From there on, it's plain darknes O_o

Seriously though, who'd have thought we cold ever poste these and rightfully claim them to be un-photoshopped ingame shots?

Hey, nice screenshots Trageton! I'm glad you like the settings, and that they worked for you. I've been checking in all day to make sure I packaged everything correctly.

I'm going to keep tweaking things. I really want to get depth of field working correctly, and not have it be overbearing. I know that bloom needs some work too with the HDR.

I haven't gotten around to the battle of Endor, but I'll see what I can do about the darkening. It's a fine balance with adjusting contrast, and I'm sure peoples monitors will behave differently.

As a side note, I love your stuff Trageton. I just used your predator OPT (among many others) to replace the aging ISD models that we use. It looks awesome!

I must be missing something...nothing happens here! I notice that you have paths setup in your files...1 in global.ini pointing to a preset on the desktop and another in profile.ini to the main exe. I tried changing the path in the profile.ini but still nothing...not touched the other path as I'm not sure what that is referring to.

hang on... 1st post mentions dx11... my card isn't dx11. The readme file mentions all sorts of d3d stuff and to rename something dependent on that...I am so confused :(

Hey Major,

You don't need to mess with any of the .ini files. Half of those are leftovers from the GUI program I've been using to edit the .ini on the fly.

Try renaming dxgi.dll to d3d9.dll. That might fire it up.

Man, those shots are pure awesome! It's really amazing how much more you can still get out of such an old engine.

I already tried d3d9.dll....still nothing.

I thought I'd have to edit those paths cos my install is not in the default place.

Should I be running the Steam or GOG versions? My install is original CDs

I run the CD version as well, so that shouldn't be the problem. As long as you put the files in the root X-Wing alliance folder, they should be working.

Have you enabled 3D hardware and such from your in-game settings? I also have the XWAUCPv1.3 upgrade installed which includes a number of fixes and additions to the XWINGALLIANCE.exe, which may be necessary for reshade to function.

Hey guys,

I've been working on updating my config to make things a little less dark, fix up the bloom, and do some of my own color correction. I added a shader from Watchdogs that adds a bit of a blue tint, but it looks really great in-game, in my opinion. I've zipped up the files again. Just drop them into your Root folder and it should work.

I suspect you may need to have a directX11" card in order to be able to use this. That, or changet the dxgi.dll to opengl32.dll and see if that works. That forces the renderer to use OPenGL instead of Directx11, but it may have some impact on certain shaders.

I've been playing the Tie Fighter conversion with that Waylon updated. Thank you Waylon for doing the tedious process of adding all the new awesome backdrops into the game!

I've been having a really good time playing this game with all of these new effects, models, backdrops, etc. It's probably the closest thing we're going to get to a modern Star Wars flight sim for a good long while.

I installed a copy of GOG version and used 1.3 upgrade and it worked. Didn't try with 1.3 & cd version, so I don't know about that. What I do know is, it killed my frame rate :D Looked good though :)

Hey, glad you finally got it working!

Try using that new link I posted. You can also go into the reshade folder, and turn off some of the more intensive shaders like Ambient Occlusion. Just change the 1 in each category to 0 to turn them off.

For instance, Ambient Occlusion is located under the Mcfx_settings.cfg. Look for this line:

#define USE_AMBIENTOCCLUSION 1

change the 1 to 0.

You can also turn off motion blur under Gemfx.cfg.

Hey, so I'm interested in giving this a go but I seem to be encountering an error on loading into the game. I get a big, long, flickering block of red error text. From what I can gather from the error messages, and from rooting around in the reshade directory, it looks like the .fx file is trying to make a call to a KeyCodes.h and a Util.h file which are supposed to be in a subfolder of the Reshade directory called Common.

I'm pretty sure I downloaded the latest version of the zip file, but the 'Common' folder doesn't seem to be included. Have I managed to get the wrong version, a corrupted download or is that folder genuinely missing?

Spent a few minutes trying this. It completely crashed to desktop when I started XWA. Win8.1 64-bit. Sorry, i have to look into this sometime in future. Are you using converted 32-bit textured models? And Reimar's 32-bit patch ? Thanks.

I believe I am having the same issue that major was having. I have tried renaming the dll different things (d3d11, d3d9, and opengl32 for example)
d3d11 crashes with an application error saying "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000fd) and creates a log D3d9 game fails to start and gets a log as well.
I would attempt to start game again and it would fail to start and add to the log. Opengl32 Game starts and runs but does not run reshade. I am running vista 32 bit with an ATI HD 3870 and DX11. I would just like to figure out this puzzle. The log is below
